CURRENT UPDATE: 5/1/2025

Dreaming of your next European or International adventure? If so, it’s time for US passport holders to gear up for some key updates that will affect your travel plans starting in 2025 through 2026. While the landscapes, historic sites, and unforgettable cuisine are waiting, you’ll need to handle a new requirement: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS now postponed until late 2026) and if transiting or visiting the UK - the ETA and the associated rules. Alongside ETIAS, understanding how the Real ID Act (due by May 2025), affects domestic travel and utilizing programs like Global Entry for expedited re-entry to the U.S. are essential steps in your travel planning.

Many countries have their own versions of expedited airport security or immigration services, designed to help travelers’ clear lines faster. Several programs are covered here.

What Is the ETA?

Traveling to the UK? The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital travel permission, electronically linked to your passport. While it streamlines your travel experience, it’s not a visa — and it doesn’t guarantee entry.

Who Needs an ETA?

If you’re a citizen of the U.S. or another visa-exempt country, you’ll need an ETA to travel to the UK starting January 8, 2025. This includes if you’re transiting through a UK airport, unless you’re not passing through border control (i.e., you remain in the international transit area — a rule that’s temporarily suspended but may return).

Here’s how it works:

Apply online before your trip. Be ready to upload a photo and possibly provide biometric data (like fingerprints). Using the app is the best way. Do not use a third party!! There are scams and huge fees. The official app is shown below.

Once approved, the ETA allows you to check in online, use eGates at UK airports, and skip filling out landing cards.

It’s valid for multiple entries during its duration (exact rules vary by country).

Fee Hike: Here's What You Need to Know About the ETA and the New Fee Hike

What’s Changing?

As of April 2025, the UK raised the cost of an ETA for U.S. citizens from £10 (around $13 USD) to £16 (approximately $19.50 USD). That’s a 60% increase, aimed at reducing the UK’s reliance on taxpayer funding to support its migration and border systems. DO NOT GET SCAMMED AND PAY MORE.

As of April 2025, the ETA requirement will also extend to non-British and non-Irish European travelers.

Key points about UK ETA for transit passengers as of 4/11/2025.

  • No ETA needed for airside transit:

Passengers who solely transit through a UK airport without going through UK border control are currently exempt from needing an ETA.

  • ETA still required for landside transit:

If you need to go through UK border control while transiting, even for a connecting flight, you will still need an ETA if your nationality requires it.

  • Check your eligibility:

Consult the UK government website to verify if you need an ETA based on your nationality

  • Criminal Record:

A traveler may be denied the ETA if they have been convicted of a crime in the last 12 months or have ever been convicted and received a custodial sentence of 12 months or more. If an ETA application is rejected, the person cannot apply again and must file for a visitor visa instead, which can take months for approval. It is advised that travelers apply for the ETA no later than three days before arriving in the U.K. If the traveler has a criminal record, they should apply well in advance and know that denial is a real possibility.

Benefits of Having an ETA (and an ePassport)

  • Faster Entry: Use fast-track eGates at airports and Eurostar terminals.

  • No Landing Card: Say goodbye to the old paper forms.

  • Streamlined Process: Ideal for frequent visitors who want a quicker border experience.

  • But don’t get too comfortable — border checks still apply.

Here’s What to Expect Upon Arrival

Even with an ETA, travelers still need to go through UK border control. Here’s a quick breakdown of the process:

  • Check-In: You’ll likely be able to check in online using your passport and ETA.

  • Border Control: On arrival, your passport will be scanned, and you may be asked to verify your identity with a facial scan or other biometric information.

  • Speak with an Officer: An immigration officer may ask you questions about your trip — where you’re staying, the length of your visit, and the purpose of your travel.

What Is ETIAS?

NOTE: This is the most current information as of 4/11/2025

As of March 15, 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which requires visa-exempt travelers to obtain an authorization before visiting the Schengen Area, is not yet operational and is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026. This is the ONLY official website to get accurate info. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en

Here is a link to their FAQ page.

How ETIAS will work:

  • ETIAS is an IT system that will verify visa-exempt visitors for security, migration, and epidemic risks.

  • It will also facilitate border crossings for most travelers who don't pose those risks.

  • Non-EU nationals who don't need a visa to travel to the Schengen area will need an ETIAS.

Who needs ETIAS

  • Citizens of 60+ visa-exempt countries will need an ETIAS, including the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and more.

  • Travelers from countries that aren't on the visa-exempt list won't need ETIAS.

Application process

  • You can apply for ETIAS through an official website or mobile app.

  • You'll receive an email confirming your application and another email with the outcome.

  • If your application is refused, the email will explain why and how to appeal.

Think of ETIAS as a travel pre-check rather than a full visa. It’s a visa waiver system, and if you’re a U.S. citizen planning a visit to Europe, you’ll need to register online before you go. The best part? It’s straightforward and designed to enhance security for travelers and residents alike.

Where Will You Need ETIAS?

More than 30 destinations will require ETIAS, including some of Europe’s most popular spots. Whether you’re exploring Amsterdam’s canals, savoring gelato in Rome, or cruising through Norway’s fjords, ETIAS will apply (including cruises). Here's how the regions break down:

  • Western Europe: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, Malta

  • Eastern Europe: Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania

  • Nordic Countries: Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Norway

  • Non-EU Schengen Members: Switzerland, Liechtenstein

  • Newest Schengen Member: Croatia (joined 2023)

  • Microstates: Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City

  • Other nations, such as Bulgaria, Romania, and Montenegro, are expected to join the ETIAS system soon, so be prepared if you’re headed there.

ETIAS Registration Process: Quick & Simple (postponed until at least late 2026)

2. Ensure Passport Validity: Check that your passport will remain valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates – although the US State Department recommends 9 months.

3. Provide Your Information: The application will ask for personal data, your travel plans, and some background info.

4. Pay a Fee: There’s a small cost, and most approvals are processed quickly—often within minutes.

More Tips for Stress-Free Planning for ETIAS

  • Stay Ahead of Requirements: Even if ETIAS isn’t a full visa, applying well before your trip will ensure smooth travel.

  • Passport Check: If your passport’s close to expiring, renew it early to avoid any last-minute hiccups. The US state department recommends 9 months left on a passport when traveling internationally.

  • Keep Informed: Regulations can change, so stay updated as 2025 approaches

  • American travelers planning to visit Europe will find the ETIAS program not only a necessity but also beneficial in many ways. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Three-Year Validity: Once issued, an ETIAS authorization is valid for three years, providing flexibility for multiple European trips without the need for reapplication.

  • Multiple-Entry Convenience: With ETIAS, you can enter multiple European countries under the same authorization, making it ideal for exploring diverse cultures and regions within a single trip or across multiple visits.

  • Fast and Efficient Processing: The ETIAS application process is designed for efficiency, with most applications processed and approved within minutes. This swift turnaround ensures a more streamlined travel planning experience.

  • Electronic Management: Upon approval, your ETIAS authorization is electronically linked to your passport. There’s no need for physical documentation, simplifying your travel process.

  • Access to Numerous Countries: ETIAS grants access to a wide range of European countries, opening doors to rich histories, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes.

Be sure to check any travel advisories per the US Government.

Travel to Thailand as of April 2025:

  • All passengers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card.

  • If the alien stays in the Kingdom longer than 90 days, he/she must notify in writing the nearest Immigration Officer, concerning place of stay, as soon as possible upon expiration of 90 days. And required to do so every 90 days.

In general, these programs offer great options for frequent international travelers who want to minimize wait times and streamline airport experiences. It's always a good idea to check eligibility and availability when planning travel to specific destinations.

Other tips about traveling internationally:

REAL ID is a type of identification that complies with stricter security standards set by the federal government. Here’s what older travelers should know about REAL ID. This is now in effect.

  1. Purpose: REAL ID is designed to enhance security and prevent identity fraud. Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights, enter certain federal facilities, and access military bases.

  2. How to Recognize It: REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper right-hand corner. If your current ID doesn’t have a star, it’s likely not REAL ID-compliant.

  3. Documents Required: To obtain a REAL ID, you must visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person and provide certain documents. Typically, this includes:

    • Proof of identity (like a valid passport or birth certificate)

    • Proof of your Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or tax form)

    • Two proofs of residency (like utility bills or a rental agreement)

    • Name change documentation (if applicable, such as a marriage certificate)

  4. Planning Ahead: For older travelers, it’s wise to plan well in advance. Collecting the necessary documentation and scheduling a DMV appointment may take time. Be aware that DMV offices may have long wait times, so consider booking your appointment online if possible.

  5. Alternatives: If you prefer not to obtain a REAL ID, you can still use other forms of identification, like a valid passport, for domestic air travel. However, a REAL ID will be more convenient for those who frequently fly within the U.S.

  6. If you travel often, getting a REAL ID may simplify airport procedures.

Know what an International Driving Permit (IDP) is and if you need one

An International Driving Permit (IDP), sometimes known as an international driver’s license, allows you to drive legally in countries that require one. It is a document that translates your identifying information into different languages. If the country you are visiting requires an IDP, you will carry it along with your U.S. driver’s license.

When visiting another country as a U.S. citizen:

  • Your state driver's license is valid while driving in Canada and Mexico.

  • In other countries, you may need to get an IDP for foreign drivers.

Use the Department of State's website to search for the country you will be visiting. On that country’s page, see the "travel and transportation" section. It will explain your destination’s driver’s license rules for visitors.

After your trip is done, what about coming home?
