Traveling the world is an amazing experience, but staying safe online while doing so can be a challenge. We rely so much on our connections from using apps, to maps, to staying in touch with family and friends or streaming content. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) offers an easy solution for protecting your personal information when you're on the go. I’ll break down what a VPN is, why it's useful, and explore some popular types of VPN options for your next adventure.

What's a VPN?

A VPN, which stands for Virtual Private Network, is a user-friendly application that you can install on your computer, smartphone, or tablet. Its main goal is to protect your online activity by adding a layer of security. When you connect to a VPN, it creates a secure, private path for your internet connection, similar to driving through a tunnel where only you can see what’s inside. This "tunnel" keeps your personal information – like passwords, banking details, and messages – safe from people who might try to snoop on it, such as hackers or others on the same network. The VPN encrypts, or scrambles, your data so it’s unreadable to anyone who doesn’t have permission to access it. This way, even if you have to use public Wi-Fi, your sensitive information stays protected.

Why Use a VPN for Travel?

When you travel, you're often connecting to public Wi-Fi networks at airports, cafes, hotels, and other places. As always, I never recommend using public Wi-Fi in general, but if you have to do this, a VPN is an absolute necessity. These networks can be a goldmine for cybercriminals looking to steal your personal information. A VPN provides an extra layer of security by masking your IP address and encrypting all the data you send and receive. This means you can browse the internet, check your emails, and even do some online banking without worrying about someone snooping on your activities (note I recommend not online banking except at home, but suggest using your cell data vs. a Wi-Fi connection).

Types of VPNs

There are several types of VPNs to consider, each with its own set of features and benefits. Here’s a look at some of the most popular options:

Personal VPNs: These are designed for individual users and are perfect for everyday tasks like browsing the web, streaming videos, and checking emails. Popular personal VPNs include NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost.

Mobile VPNs: Specifically designed for mobile devices, these VPNs offer seamless protection as you move between different networks. They maintain your connection securely even if you switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data. OpenVPN and NordVPN both offer solid mobile options.

Browser VPNs: Some VPN services offer browser extensions that encrypt your browsing traffic without requiring a full VPN app. These are ideal for quick, secure browsing sessions. Examples include the browser extensions offered by CyberGhost and ExpressVPN.

Streaming VPNs: These are optimized for streaming services, allowing you to bypass geo-restrictions and access content from different countries. If you’re traveling and want to catch up on your favorite shows, VPNs like Surfshark and ExpressVPN are top picks. In many cases this will let you access Netflix, YouTube, Hulu outside of your home area. My recommendation is to download Netflix and use it offline when possible.

How to Choose the Right VPN?

When selecting a VPN for travel, choosing the right Virtual Private Network (VPN) can feel like an intimidating task with so many options available. But worry not! Consider factors such as security features, ease of use, speed, and customer support. It's also important to choose a VPN that has servers in the countries you plan to visit, as this can affect your internet speed and access to local content.

How to Choose the Right VPN for You

In today’s digital age, here’s a straightforward guide to help you navigate the key considerations and find the perfect VPN for your needs.

1. Understand Your Needs

First, ask yourself how you’ll use a VPN. Is it for securing your online activities while traveling, bypassing geo-restrictions for streaming, or ensuring privacy while working remotely? Your primary use should guide your choice.

2. Look for Strong Security Features

Ensure the VPN offers robust security features such as:

Encryption: Look for VPNs that use advanced encryption standards, like AES-256, to protect your data. This is very important – this is what protects the data.

Data Activity Logs: Choose a VPN that doesn’t keep logs of your activities. This ensures your privacy is maintained.

Kill Switch: This feature cuts your internet connection if the VPN drops, preventing your data from being exposed.

3. Check Server Locations

A VPN with a wide range of server locations can offer better speed and access to geographically restricted content. If you travel frequently or want to access content from specific countries, make sure the VPN has servers in those regions.

4. Evaluate Speed and Performance

While security is crucial, you don't want to compromise on speed. Look for VPNs known for their fast and stable connections. Some VPNs may slow down your internet, so it's wise to check user reviews or conduct speed tests. This is a big factor, some VPN’s will potentially stop data flow in certain areas. I’ve had to disengage a VPN before to access information when it stalled.

5. User-Friendly Interface

A VPN should be easy to set up and use, especially if you’re not tech-savvy. Look for VPNs with intuitive interfaces and clear instructions. Many VPN services offer apps for various devices, ensuring a seamless experience across your computer, phone, and tablet. It should have an easy login and connection process.

6. Consider Compatibility

Ensure the VPN is compatible with all your devices. Most reputable VPN providers offer apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and even browser extensions. Check if the VPN supports multiple simultaneous connections, so you can protect all your devices at once.

7. Customer Support

Customer support is of utmost importance if you run into issues. Look for VPN providers that offer 24/7 support through live chat, email, or phone. Good support can help you quickly resolve any problems and get back to secure browsing.

8. Training and FAQ

Make sure that the VPN service has easy access to training materials, such as a searchable help forum, FAQ section, and video tutorials.

9. Pricing and Free Trials

Lastly, consider your budget. While free VPNs exist, they often come with limitations on speed, data, or security. Paid VPNs generally offer better service and more features. Some VPN services may offer free trials and most offer money-back guarantees, allowing you to use their service before committing.

Most VPN’s will cost between $2 and $5 per month on a long term basis with some free months added. If you only want it for a short term, it can be $10-15 for one month. I paid $12.99 for a month of ExpressVPN.

Popular VPN Options

NordVPN: Known for its strong security features, extensive server network, and reliable performance. They claim to offer the fastest speeds and the most VPN options. As of the publication of this blog, they have a lot of great pricing on long term agreements.

ExpressVPN: Offers high-speed servers, excellent security, and a user-friendly interface. They mention fast speeds and a decent number of servers. They offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

CyberGhost: Provides a good balance of security, speed, and ease of use, with specific servers optimized for streaming and torrenting. They state they are the largest in the USA, with 100 servers across the world. They offer a 45 day free trial.

Surfshark: A cost-effective option that allows unlimited device connections and offers robust security features. They offer unlimited devices and as of this publication a good price.

TotalAV – this is a highly rated, cost conscious option, who offer antivirus and adblocking as well (many do).

These are the most popular and the best rated in the technology world.

In today’s digital world, protecting your online privacy is more important than ever. Choosing the right VPN can offer you peace of mind, whether you're browsing from home, traveling, or connecting to public Wi-Fi. A VPN helps safeguard your personal information.
