Solo travel is experiencing a remarkable transformation, and for women over 50. Let's embrace, empower, and encourage the trips!
The Future of Solo Travel for Women Over 50 in 2025
Solo travel is experiencing a remarkable transformation, and for women over 50. Growing year over year in popularity, 2025 marks an era of unprecedented freedom, empowerment, and opportunity. A recent survey found that nearly 40% of female travelers are interested in solo travel in 2025, up 8 percentage points from the previous year. With growing travel industry recognition, expanded travel options, and a greater focus on safety and experience, solo female travel has never been more accessible or rewarding.
Increasing Popularity and Empowerment
Solo travel, once considered unconventional for older women, is now a thriving movement. Estimates suggested that women over 50 accounted for approximately 30-35% of all solo travelers in 2024. More women are embracing the independence and flexibility that come with exploring the world on their own terms. Traveling solo allows for self-discovery, personal growth, and the chance to step outside one's comfort zone. With the rise of female travel communities, support networks, and online resources, women feel more confident than ever in embarking on solo adventures. A few of the of online groups that are supportive and helpful in my opinion are:
There are many other groups - Gate 1 Solo travelers, Solo In Style, and more. You should review them and see if they suit your needs.
Strong Economic Influence
Women over 50 hold significant purchasing power in the travel industry. Many have financial stability and free time to travel extensively, whether it’s multiple trips per year or long-term stays in new destinations. Travel industry reports indicated that women in the 50+ age group were taking an average of 2-3 solo trips per year. With a desire to invest in experiences rather than material possessions, this demographic is reshaping the way the travel industry caters to mature solo adventurers. Adventure travel companies reported a 15-20% increase in bookings from solo female travelers over 50 in 2024 compared to 2023
Industry Recognition and Tailored Options
Recognizing the rise in solo female travelers, the travel industry is slowly adapting with some tailored offerings. Women-only tours, increased availability of single staterooms on cruises, and reduced or waived solo supplements are becoming more common. Norwegian Cruise Line, which added about 1,000 solo staterooms to its 19-ship fleet in 2024, along with activities and a lounge just for solo guests, so kudos to them. Uniworld River Cruises said it has seen a 31% increase in solo guests between 2019 and 2023 and a 61% jump in female solo travelers over the same period. It’s offering its first women-only river cruise in August 2025. However, many cruise lines are still not solo friendly cost-wise, but if you are flexible, they may offer deals 90 days out of a trip.
Tour operators such as Road Scholar, EF Go Tours, OATS, and G Adventures are expanding their itineraries to include more women-focused and solo-friendly trips, making it easier than ever for women to embark on adventures suited to their interests. There are numerous smaller travel agents that host small group trips for the mature solo female.

Safe and Welcoming Destinations
Safety remains a top priority for solo female travelers, and in 2025, more destinations are catering to this need. Over half of solo travelers cite safety as a primary concern across multiple surveys. More experienced solo travelers do report that they aren’t as concerned within these statistics.
Places like Kyoto, Japan, and Vancouver, Canada, are becoming increasingly popular for their reputation as safe, welcoming locations where women can explore freely. Additionally, technology has made solo travel safer than ever, with apps designed for navigation, emergency assistance, and community support ensuring peace of mind while on the road. Personal safety is my number one priority while traveling as well.
Focus on Specific Interests and Experiences
Women over 50 are looking for more than just traditional sightseeing; they seek meaningful and enriching travel experiences. The rise of wellness travel, adventure activities, and cultural immersion reflects this shift. Wellness retreats that rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit are in high demand, as are adventure-focused trips that provide thrilling experiences like hiking, kayaking, and wildlife safaris. Women are also increasingly interested in learning-based travel, where they can engage in cooking classes, language immersion programs, or art workshops.
2025 – A Year of Empowerment and Exploration
Solo travel for women over 50 is thriving, and 2025 is set to be a milestone year for this growing movement. With travel companies recognizing and catering to their needs, safe and exciting destinations becoming more accessible, and an increasing focus on meaningful experiences, there has never been a better time for women to embark on solo adventures. Whether seeking self-discovery, relaxation, or adventure, women over 50 are proving that the world is theirs to explore—one solo journey at a time.
