Choosing Your Travel Style: Independent, Group Tours, or Cruises
Planning your next adventure and feeling overwhelmed by the choices? One major decision is how to structure your trip: should you embrace the freedom of independent travel, join a structured group tour, or indulge in the convenience of a cruise? Each travel style comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks, and finding the right fit for your preferences and goals can make all the difference.

When planning your next adventure, one of the biggest decisions is how to structure your trip. Should you go it alone, join a tour group, or hop on a cruise? Each style of travel offers unique advantages and potential drawbacks. I’ve experienced all three, and each has its own charm.
Independent Travel
Independent travel offers the ultimate in flexibility and freedom. You can immerse yourself deeply in the local culture, linger longer in places you love, and potentially save on costs. One of my most memorable solo trips was to England and Ireland, where I spent days wandering through London, Liverpool, and Dublin seeing the sites on my own schedule. I did add a few day tours in all three locations, and it was a perfect combination for me. I have videos on my YouTube channel if you are interested.
However, independent travel requires significant planning and research. Using AI-generated itineraries can be a great starting point. Tools like Google Maps and TripIt can help organize your trip, while apps like Google Translate bridge communication gaps. Here's a link to a webinar I conducted for AARP on using AI for travel planning. Also, if you want the human touch, a travel advisor is always the way to go. Just think how great it would be to use AI for your research, pick what you wanted, and then have someone else manage the details!
While traveling independently can be rewarding, it can also be stressful, especially in unfamiliar places. Language barriers can be a challenge but learning a few basic phrases and using translation apps can make an enormous difference. Safety is another critical concern, particularly for solo female travelers. Always research your destination’s safety guidelines and consider staying in accommodations with helpful reviews.
The pros of independent travel are maximum flexibility and freedom to go where you want, when you want. It may provide deeper cultural immersion and exploration of smaller cities a formal tour might not reach. It could cost less depending on lodging, etc.
The cons of independent travel are that it requires extensive planning and research. It can be stressful in unfamiliar locations and where there is a language barrier. There could be safety concerns, especially for solo travelers.
Practical Tips:
Use AI tools and apps for planning and navigation.
Learn basic phrases in the local language.
Stay in well-reviewed accommodations.
Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
Group Tours
Group tours provide the convenience of pre-planned itineraries and the safety of traveling with others. In a recent group tour, to Iceland, which covered the highlights, I was fortunate to view the Northern Lights two nights in a row. The knowledgeable guide provided rich historical context, took us to a perfect hotel in the middle of nowhere to see the lights, and was able to pivot to another hot springs even after the original location was closed due to potential volcanic activity. I made lasting friendships with fellow travelers. It was a great trip even with 40 participants, and everything went smoothly.
The convenience of having someone else manage the group cannot be overstated. You simply show up at the designated place and time, and everything is taken care of. This can be particularly beneficial in countries where navigating the local transport system might be challenging.
The pros of group tours are pre-planned itineraries with expert guides. Safety and social opportunities. Access to exclusive experiences
The downside of a group tour is less flexibility and personal choice. Fast-paced schedules can be exhausting and there may be long bus rides. You have to pack and unpack every day or two as you move from hotel to hotel. There will likely be higher costs, especially with solo supplements.
Types of Group Tours:
Small Group Tours: Typically 10-24 participants. These tours often include boutique accommodations and local dining. For example, a small group tour in Tuscany might involve cooking classes with local chefs and wine tastings at family-run vineyards. Incidentally, I am the group coordinator for that same type of small tour in April 2025 to Tuscany and Florence. Here’s a link if interested.
Large Group Tours: Typically 25-50 participants. These tours might use larger hotels and have a more rigid schedule. They can be more cost-effective but might lack personal attention.
Common Activities:
Cultural Tours: Museum visits, historical site tours, and traditional performances.
Culinary Tours: Food tours, cooking classes, and wine or beer tastings.
Adventure Tours: Hiking, wildlife spotting, and other outdoor activities.
Wellness Tours: Yoga classes, spa treatments, and meditation sessions.
Educational Tours: Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities.
Immersive Experiences: Volunteering opportunities and language exchanges.
Practical Tips:
Carefully review the itinerary and activity level to ensure it matches your interests and physical capabilities.
Read reviews of the tour company and guides.
Be prepared for group dynamics and remain flexible.
Let’s talk about Cruises
Cruises offer a unique way to see multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. On a recent river cruise along the Rhine River, I enjoyed the scenic journey and the convenience of docking right in the heart of charming European towns. Each morning brought a new destination to explore.
Embarking on a cruise offers the unique advantage of visiting multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. The all-inclusive pricing simplifies budgeting, allowing travelers to enjoy a wide range of dining and entertainment options without worrying about additional costs.
On large ocean cruises they offer gourmet meals, casual dining, and Broadway-style shows, pools, spas, bars, and casinos. There is always something to enjoy on board, providing a diverse and engaging experience.
However, both ocean and river cruises do have their disadvantages. The limited time in each port can make it challenging to fully explore and appreciate each destination. The potential for crowded and impersonal experiences on the large ship can detract from the sense of adventure. Additionally, extra costs for shore excursions, drink packages and certain amenities can add up, making the overall trip more expensive than initially anticipated.
Types of Cruises:
Ocean Cruises: Large ships accommodating thousands of passengers. They offer extensive onboard facilities, including theaters, casinos, and multiple dining options. For example, a Mediterranean cruise might include stops in Barcelona, Rome, and Athens.
River Cruises: Smaller ships with 100-200 passengers. They provide a more intimate experience with scenic views and often include excursions in the cost. Popular routes include the Rhine, Danube, and Mekong rivers.
Key Differences:
Ship Size: Ocean cruises are larger, with more amenities but potentially more crowds. River cruises are smaller, with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Onboard Experience: Ocean cruises offer extensive entertainment options, while river cruises focus on local culture and scenery.
Docking: Ocean cruises often dock at industrial ports, requiring transportation to city centers. River cruises dock right in the heart of towns.
Demographics: River cruises tend to attract an older crowd and are more solo traveler friendly. Ocean cruises are multi-generational and have a lot of kids during peak travel times.
Accessibility: Ocean cruise ships generally offer more extensive accessible facilities, services, and activities due to their larger size, but navigating these large ships and dealing with crowds can be challenging for those with limited mobility. They do accommodate wheelchairs, and some allow scooters. River cruise ships, being smaller and easier to navigate, provide a more intimate and personalized experience, with closer docking locations to town centers; however, they have fewer accessible facilities and activities compared to ocean cruises. They may not have elevators for every deck, and they might not allow wheelchairs or walkers. Many European cities are difficult for those with ambulatory issues due to street conditions and stairs. The best choice depends on the specific accessibility needs and preferences of the passenger.
Practical Tips:
Choose a balcony room, if possible, for better views and less claustrophobia.
Be aware of potential additional costs for excursions and amenities.
Consider motion sickness remedies if you’re prone to seasickness. River cruises tend to be in calmer waters so keep that in mind if this is a problem for you.
Research the environmental policies of cruise lines if sustainability is important to you.
Specialized Cruises:
Luxury Cruises: High-end ships with gourmet dining, spa treatments, and personalized service.
Expedition Cruises: Smaller ships that explore remote destinations like Antarctica or the Galapagos. There are even barge cruises in Europe where you bike from location to location.
Themed Cruises: Cruises centered around interests such as music, art, or cuisine.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your travel goals, budget, desired level of planning involvement, and personal preferences. Many travelers enjoy mixing these styles, perhaps combining an independent city stay with a guided tour or cruise segment. My diverse travel experiences have taught me to appreciate the unique benefits each style offers.
