Chasing Dreams on the Rocky Mountaineer: My Bucket List Adventure
Join me on a magical solo adventure aboard the Rocky Mountaineer through the stunning Canadian Rockies. From Calgary’s vibrant city life to Banff’s breathtaking landscapes and Jasper’s serene wilderness, this journey is filled with scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and luxurious train travel concluding in Vancouver.

Let's Go!
I’ve always been charmed by trains. There’s something magical about the rhythmic motion, the ever-changing landscapes, and the sense of adventure that a train journey brings. So, when I located an opportunity to embark on a learning journey with Rocky Mountaineer, it promptly became a must-do on my bucket list and was simply too good to pass up. The Rocky Mountaineer is renowned for its luxurious features, offering unforgettable experiences through the stunning landscapes of the Canadian Rockies, and in the Western US.
The Start: Exploring Calgary
My adventure began in Calgary, a vibrant city nestled between the Canadian Rockies and the vast prairies. Known for its annual Stampede, Calgary is a perfect blend of modern skyscrapers and rich cowboy heritage. Arriving a day early, I took the time to explore Stephen Avenue, a historic street lined with eclectic restaurants, shops, and bustling activity. Of course, a visit to the Calgary Tower and standing on the glass platform was an essential activity.
The next morning, I joined a locally guided walking tour. This was where I met a fellow solo traveler from Australia, and we instantly hit it off. We explored the city's landmarks, indulged in some delicious chocolates, and ended our day with a wonderful meal at a restaurant housed in a historic bank building—an unexpected gem in this modern city.
The Journey to Banff: Breathtaking Scenery and Wildlife
Before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer’s Motor Coach (operated by Brewster Transportation) there was a white cowboy hat ceremony from the Chamber of Commerce at our hotel breakfast. This Calgary tradition symbolizing warm western hospitality. We all received a complimentary White Cowboy Hat, and that set the tone for the exciting adventure ahead. We then hopped on board a luxury motor coach driven by Patrick, whose enthusiasm and stories about the area made the trip even more enjoyable. Brewster Transportation provides motor coaches for the Rocky Mountaineer tours, and they are well known in the area for their great service. As we drove, the landscape transitioned from the city to the stunning alpine vistas of the Canadian Rockies. We even spotted our first elk, grazing by the roadside—a sign of the natural wonders yet to come.
Banff, often called the crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies, was our first major stop and where we would stay for 2 nights at the Moose Hotel & Suites, a charming and modern alpine-style accommodation located just a short walk from the town's main area. It’s rustic décor with plenty of natural wood and stone elements, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Banff is famous for its gorgeous alpine scenery, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We cruised on Lake Minnewaska, took the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views, which was just spectacular. From the top you could see the entire valley, including the Fairmont Banff, which is often photographed in the winter and looks like a castle. The awe and wonder of this experience cannot be overstated, it was incredible.
We then visited the world-famous Lake Louise, where the turquoise waters shimmer against a backdrop of towering peaks and at the shore is the Fairmont Lake Louise one of the most iconic hotels in the world, set against the backdrop of the Victoria Glacier. As I stood on the shore gazing out at the reflection of the mountains in the water, I sighed deeply with the realization that my dream to visit this exact spot had come true. This luxury hotel did not disappoint other than we weren’t staying there! Most Rocky Mountaineer guests do stay there though!
Another highlight was our visit to Moraine Lake, known for its vibrant blue waters that seem almost surreal in their perfection. From there, we traveled to Emerald Lake, with towering mountains surrounding its tranquil waters, creating a perfect reflection. Along the way, excitement filled the bus as we spotted a bear! Although the only one we did see on the trip, it was a reminder that these landscapes are as wild as they are beautiful.
The Icefields Parkway: A Journey Through Time
One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was the scenic drive along the Icefields Parkway, a stunning route that weaves through both Banff and Jasper National Parks. The jewel of the Parkway was our visit to the Columbia Icefield, where we boarded a specially designed Ice Explorer and ventured onto the ancient Athabasca Glacier. Standing on this centuries-old glacier, surrounded by miles of ice, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Holding a piece of ice in my hand made me ponder the incredible span of time it had been there, frozen in history.
The experience didn’t end there—we also visited the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, a glass-floored platform that extends over the Sunwapta Valley. Walking out onto that skywalk felt like we were floating above the mountains, with views stretching for miles below. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the breathtaking scenery made every step worth it. Kudos to a few in the group who overcame their fear of heights to witness the attraction.
Jasper and Maligne Lake: Serenity in the Wilderness
Our next destination was Jasper, a quieter and less commercialized town than Banff, known for its expansive wilderness. Here, we took a peaceful cruise on Maligne Lake, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The glassy waters, framed by towering peaks, offered a serene contrast to the rugged adventure of the Icefields. We stopped and got off the boat to visit the famous Spirit Island, one of the most photographed spots in the world, which truly lives up to the hype. A few brave peers wandered into the chilly waters…brr.
Nestled in the heart of Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge offers a rustic, yet luxurious retreat surrounded by pristine wilderness. The property is spread across 700 acres, featuring beautiful log cabins and upscale rooms with views of Lac Beauvert and the surrounding mountains. We made a stop there to see this iconic property but noticed that heavy smoke was filling the air as a nearby fire was growing quickly.
A Wildfire Fire Delays Our Journey
Unfortunately, our journey took an unexpected turn. A nearby forest fire forced the evacuation of Jasper, and we found ourselves spending several hours on a bus, traveling to a nearby town where we stayed in a church for several hours while our hosts tried to figure out what would happen next. Our original journey to Quesnel and Whistler and expected train ride, was no longer an option. Despite the abrupt delay and the uncertainty, the sense of camaraderie among the group kept spirits high. It was a reminder of how unpredictable travel can be, but also how shared challenges can bring people together. The hospitality shown by the church in Valemont will not be forgotten.
After this interruption, our new journey took a scenic detour to Kamloops for two nights before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer. This diversion turned out to be a delightful addition to our adventure, offering more opportunities to explore the stunning landscapes of British Columbia. Attitude is everything when the unexpected happens.
Exploring Kamloops
Kamloops, known as the “Tournament Capital of Canada,” is a vibrant city nestled at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers. It’s a hub of outdoor activities and cultural experiences, making it a perfect stopover on our journey. We decided to make the best of it and went to a local winery, where I had a “cider flight”. It was particularly good. After a group meal, we walked over to a music festival at the river where an amazing sunset completed the evening.
All Aboard the Rocky Mountaineer: A Journey Through the Rockies
Early the next morning, our motor coach picked us up at the hotel and to the train, where we finally boarded the Rocky Mountaineer, the highlight of the trip. The train lived up to every expectation. From the moment I stepped onboard, I was swept into a world of luxury and breathtaking scenery. Seated in Gold Leaf service, the glass-domed carriages allowed for unobstructed views of the towering mountains, winding rivers, and sprawling valleys that make the Rockies so majestic.
The service on the train was impeccable, with gourmet meals prepared from locally sourced ingredients and endless storytelling from the knowledgeable staff. We were treated to everything from the history of the railway to details about the unique ecosystems we were traveling through. As I sat back and watched the landscape unfold, I couldn’t help but feel deeply grateful for the experience.
The people onboard were just as memorable as the journey itself. Our group was a delightful mix of travel agents, couples, solos, and adventurers. I especially enjoyed my time with two lovely young women from Ottawa who kept everyone laughing, and an engaging gay couple from San Francisco who had been married for over 55 years. They were on their way to Munich to celebrate their anniversary, and their love story added a sense of joy to the journey.
As the train wound its way through the Rockies, each turn revealing another breathtaking view, I felt the worries of the world slip away. There’s something profoundly peaceful about watching the world pass by from the comfort of a train, knowing you’re traveling through one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Vancouver: City of Contrasts
Our journey eventually brought us to Vancouver, where we would spend the next two days. Although I was sad to see the train journey end, the city had so much to offer. Boarding a motor coach city tour operated by Destination Canada, we started with a visit to Stanley Park, marveling at the totem poles that tell the story of the Indigenous people who have lived in the area for centuries. Our tour continued to the thrilling Capilano Suspension Bridge. Walking above the treetops, with the bridge swaying beneath my feet, was exhilarating. It’s not for the faint of heart, but the views are unforgettable. Afterward, I spent some time by the Olympic Torch, watching the busy seaplanes take off against the backdrop of the city skyline.
The tour included a visit the Granville Island Public Market, where I indulged my love for food photography and finally tried poutine. While it wasn’t quite the culinary revelation I had hoped for, the experience of wandering through the vibrant market, filled with local produce and artisan goods, was a delight. I love a good local market no matter where I travel.
Our group then continued back to the harbor at Canada Place, to experience Flyover Canada. This is an exhilarating flight simulation ride and a state-of-the-art attraction which offered a unique way to experience the vast and diverse landscapes of Canada from coast to coast. Although apprehensive about motion sickness, it was a fun and memorable experience.
That evening the group went to a local restaurant for a celebratory final dinner hosted by our tour managers and we were joined by the CEO of Rocky Mountaineer and many of their local staff who were absolutely amazing during the time of the evacuation emergency, handling the rerouting of hundreds of guests over a few days. We were grateful to be able to thank them personally.
Final Reflections
Despite a few setbacks along the way, this trip left my heart full and my mind packed with memories. The Rocky Mountaineer is not just a train ride; it’s a journey that takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth, offering moments of awe and reflection at every turn. Whether you’re seeking adventure, serenity, or a little bit of both, this is a journey that will leave you with stories to tell and memories to cherish forever.
For anyone with a passion for trains, or simply a desire to experience the beauty of the Canadian Rockies in a way that few ever do, the Rocky Mountaineer is an experience you’ll never forget.
